What Is Laser Cleaning?

Laser cleaning is a modern way to remove rust, paint, corrosion, grease, grime and other unwanted material from a surface — without grinding, sandblasting or harsh chemicals.

The process uses a highly controlled laser beam to target and remove the unwanted layer while leaving the material underneath intact. It can be used on everything from automotive parts and machinery to metal surfaces, stone, concrete and restoration projects.

If you’ve never seen laser cleaning in action, it’s pretty remarkable. Watch the video to see how it works.

How Laser Cleaning Works

Laser cleaning works by directing short, controlled pulses of laser energy at the surface being cleaned. The unwanted material — such as rust, paint, oxidation, grease or other buildup — absorbs that energy and is rapidly broken down and removed.

The key is precision. The laser can be adjusted for the material and the job, allowing the operator to target the unwanted layer without grinding away or damaging the surface underneath.

There’s no abrasive media to blast, no harsh chemicals to apply and far less mess to clean up afterward. Watch the video to see the process in action.

Laser Cleaning is Perfect For

Paint/Graffiti Removal

The laser targets the unwanted paint or coating and removes it layer by layer. Because the process can be precisely adjusted for the surface being treated, operators can work toward removing the graffiti while minimizing unnecessary impact on the underlying material.

Oil, Grease & Contaminant Removal

Traditional degreasers, pressure washing and chemical cleaners can be effective, but they may require significant water, repeated treatments and cleanup of contaminated runoff. Abrasive methods can also alter the surface you’re trying to clean. Controlled laser energy targets oil residue, grease, carbon buildup and other contaminants, breaking down and removing unwanted material without abrasive blasting.

Oxidation Removal

Laser cleaning uses precisely controlled pulses of energy to target the oxidized layer on a surface. That layer absorbs the laser energy differently than the underlying material, allowing the operator to remove unwanted oxidation while minimizing unnecessary removal of the base material. This can be particularly useful when the component itself is valuable, detailed or needs to maintain its original dimensions.

Surface Preparation

Rust, oxidation, old coatings, oil, grease and other contaminants can interfere with adhesion, welding and finishing. Even when a surface looks relatively clean, contamination can affect the quality and durability of the work that comes next. Laser cleaning provides a precise way to prepare a surface without relying on abrasive blasting or heavy chemical treatments.

Uses of Laser Cleaning

Automotive & Mechanics

Anyone who’s worked on cars knows the problem: the part you need is buried underneath years of rust, grease, paint, carbon and grime.
Traditionally, getting it clean can mean wire wheels, grinders, chemical baths, solvents, abrasive blasting — and a whole lot of time. Laser cleaning gives mechanics and automotive professionals another option.

Industrial & Manufacturing

In an industrial environment, dirty equipment isn’t just an appearance issue. Rust, oxidation, coatings, grease and production buildup can interfere with maintenance, inspection, welding, bonding and the next step in the manufacturing process.
Laser cleaning provides manufacturers and industrial facilities with a precise way to remove unwanted surface material without introducing abrasive blasting media or relying heavily on chemical cleaning.

Municipal & Government

Cities, counties and government agencies maintain an enormous variety of public assets — from buildings, sidewalks and infrastructure to vehicles, equipment, monuments and public spaces. Keeping those assets clean and serviceable often requires removing graffiti, corrosion, paint, coatings and years of accumulated contamination.
Laser cleaning gives public agencies another tool for tackling those jobs with precision, reduced chemical use and less secondary waste than many conventional cleaning methods.

Commercial Property & Property Management

Commercial properties take a beating. Graffiti, rust, oil, grease, oxidation and years of environmental exposure can quickly turn a well-maintained property into one that looks neglected.
For property managers, facility managers and commercial building owners, laser cleaning provides another option for maintaining and restoring surfaces without automatically reaching for abrasive blasting, harsh chemical stripping or replacement.
